How Daily Mass Benefitted My Day to Day Life

Prayer is at the heart of any relationship with God, but to many people, including myself, maintaining a healthy prayer life is a constant struggle. Our daily schedules become so filled with our careers, family, and other activities that it seems we barely have time to breathe. But this is really when we need prayer the most. As I write this I am reminded of a quote from St. Francis de Sales, “Every one of us needs a half hour of prayer a day, except when we are busy, and then we need an hour.” In other words, as life becomes increasingly more complicated and hectic, that’s when our relationship with God becomes ever more critical.

In my personal experience, attendance at daily mass as helped me greatly in this area. I am fortunate in that there are a few churches near my job that offer daily mass at times that are easy to attend before I have to report to the office. I also realize that not everyone reading this may be in a similar situation and finding a daily mass may be much more difficult. I strongly encourage everyone to give it serious consideration. Start off slowly by attending a daily mass once or twice a week and you can eventually grow from there.  The benefits and graces from faithfully attending a weekday mass even once or twice weekly are powerful.

Happy New Year - Top 10 Reasons for Hope

Happy New Year to all! May 2012 be filled with God's peace blessings on your families. May God also continue to bless us and fill us with hope as we work to rebuild His church.

Judging by the video below, despite the uncertainty and darkness around us, God has shown He is with us and that we should be filled with hope in 2012.

Happy 4th of July - May God Bless America.

In an age where Christianity in under attack by a secular world and God is being forced out of the public sector, let us take some time to reflect on this song and its lyrics. Hopefully this will help us remember a time when we were proud of our nation's Christian roots, a time when all Americans proudly declared in the pledge that this is a nation that was founded "Under God". May God pour His blessings and grace upon our nation again, because our nation and our world desperately needs it now more than ever.

Battle Hymn of the Republic
Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord:
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword:
His truth is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His truth is marching on.

I have seen Him in the watch-fires of a hundred circling camps,
They have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps;
I can read His righteous sentence by the dim and flaring lamps:
His day is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
His day is marching on.

I have read a fiery gospel writ in burnished rows of steel:
"As ye deal with my contemners, so with you my grace shall deal;
Let the Hero, born of woman, crush the serpent with his heel,
Since God is marching on."

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Since God is marching on.

He has sounded forth the trumpet that shall never call retreat;
He is sifting out the hearts of men before His judgment-seat:
Oh, be swift, my soul, to answer Him! Be jubilant, my feet!
Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free,
While God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
While God is marching on.

He is coming like the glory of the morning on the wave,
He is Wisdom to the mighty, He is Succour to the brave,
So the world shall be His footstool, and the soul of Time His slave,
Our God is marching on.

Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Glory, glory, hallelujah!
Our God is marching on.

Responding to the Crisis of Fatherhood

This is an outstanding article by Fr. Roger Landry on the crisis of fatherhood in our society and how it impacts our relationship with God the Father. Please take a moment to read and reflect on this article.

Responding to the Crisis of Fatherhood

Today, Catholic Americans mark two celebrations: Holy Trinity Sunday and Father’s Day. The feast of the Holy Trinity is an occasion on which not only Catholics seek to deepen their appreciation of the mystery, and enter into the reality, of the communion of persons who is our Triune God. In particular, it’s a day on which normally special attention is given to God the Father, since on Pentecost we focus specifically on the Holy Spirit and throughout the year we normally concentrate on the life, words and works of Jesus. The Gospel reading the Church gives us this Sunday facilitates this focus on God the Father, because it shows how God the Father “so loved the world that he gave his only Son” (Jn 3:16).

This attention to the fatherhood of the first Person of the Blessed Trinity — especially on Father’s Day — is particularly timely and important. The future Pope Benedict, not one ordinarily prone to hyperbole, once said that this failure to see, appreciate and grasp the link between human paternity and the fatherhood of God is one of the greatest threats to the modern world.

“The crisis of fatherhood we are living today is an element, perhaps the most important, threatening man in his humanity,” Cardinal Ratzinger said in a remarkable March 15, 2000 speech at the Cathedral of Palermo, Sicily. The crisis of fatherhood facing modern society — a true “dissolution of fatherhood” — comes, he continued, from reducing paternity to a merely biological phenomenon, as an act of generation, sometimes even carried out in a laboratory, without its human and spiritual dimensions. That reduction not only leads to the “dissolution of what it means to be a son or a daughter,” but, on a spiritual plane, impedes our relationship to relate to God as he is and revealed himself. God, Cardinal Ratzinger stressed, “willed to manifest and describe himself as Father.” Human fatherhood provides us an analogy to understand the fatherhood of God, but “when human fatherhood has dissolved, all statements about God the Father are empty.” The crisis of fatherhood, therefore, leaves the human person confused about God and himself. That’s why, he argued, the crisis of paternity is perhaps the most important element threatening the human person and society.

You are my God

This is a powerful video accompanied by a beautiful song by Catholic musician Tony Melendez. I came across this video a while ago and feel it is really worth sharing.

Why am I Catholic?

Wow! That is the only way I can describe how I feel about this awesome video.

Trust in God

Last night, I finally watched the movie “Facing the Giants”, which was first released back in 2007 by Sherwood Baptist Church. This is the same church that produced the inspirational Christian movies “Flywheel” and “Fireproof”. Before I go any further, I want to mention that I have had this movie on my DVR for nearly six months. I heard it was a great movie so when I noticed it was being broadcast on TV, I decided to record it and watch it later. I could say that I was just too busy to get to it sooner, but yet I made time to keep up with the typically mindless entertainment I usually watch on TV. (Sports, and a few reality shows)

My initial reaction to the film was that I wished I had watched it sooner. I was moved and inspired by this wonderful story of overcoming fear and putting our total trust in God. I will admit that a few scenes brought tears to my eyes. I don’t want to give away any details in the event that you haven’t watched it yet. I urge you to go and find a copy of this film and watch it if you haven’t done so already. (It is currently available on Netflix.)

While I wish I had watched it sooner, it is no coincidence that I crossed paths with “Facing The Giants” at this particular time in my life. I think that it all has to do with God’s timing. Recently, I have been wrestling with a decision about my career that would have both negative and positive implications on my family life. While this movie obviously did not have the answer to my dilemma, I think it provided me with some clarity on how I should approach this decision. It seems to me that God chose this time for me to watch this to remind me that I should not fear but to trust in Him and know that He will provide.

It is easy to praise God and say we trust in Him when things are going well. But how many of us remember to praise him and trust him during difficult or uncertain times? How many of us think to tell God that no matter what happens, good or bad, I will still love You and worship You? That was the point of “Facing The Giants”. It’s message was simple but powerful: Everything is for His Glory and that we should always turn to Him as our Father who will protect us and provide for us. That has always been a struggle for me. This movie served as yet another reminder from God that it is because of His blessings that I have gotten this far, and He will help me to continue on.

If you haven’t watched “Facing The Giants” yet, I strongly recommend it. In these uncertain times full of economic, political, and social turmoil, we all could benefit from its message of trusting in our loving Father.

I want to leave you with a few quotes from the movie that really touched me. I have also included below a video below that includes scenes and the song "Voice of Truth" by Casting Crowns from "Facing The Giants".

“Revelation Chapter 3 says: We serve a God that opens doors that no one can shut, and he shuts doors that no one can open. He says: Behold, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Coach Taylor, the Lord is not through with you yet. You still have an open door here, and until the Lord moves you, you're to bloom right where you're planted...”

“I heard a story about two farmers who desperately needed rain. And both of them prayed for rain, but only one of them went out and prepared his fields to receive it. Which one do you think trusted God to send the rain? Well, the one who prepared his fields for it. Which one are you? God will send the rain when He's ready. You need to prepare your field to receive it.”

[In order for God to do great things with this team,] we need to give Him our best in every area. And if we win, we praise Him; and if we lose we praise Him. Either way. We honor Him with our actions and our attitudes.”

Fourth Week of Advent: No Room At The Inn

“She wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn” (Luke 2:7).

The fact that there was no room for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in the inn at Bethlehem on the first Christmas should make us wonder, because the birth of Christ was foreseen and planned by God from all eternity. Hundreds of years before it happened, the prophets announced he would be born of a virgin (Is. 7:14) and that Bethlehem would be his birthplace (Micah 5:2). Many other details of his life and death were also foretold. Did God, then, forget to make room for his only Son? How is it possible that there was no room, when the child born at Christmas owns the inn, and Bethlehem, and the world, and every inch of room in the whole universe?

Obviously, God did this on purpose. There was no room in the inn, because this demonstrates that world has rejected God. The world makes no room for the God who created it. There was no room in the inn because God wanted to show that His Son comes as a Savior, to reconcile a world that is at enmity with God. Being turned away from the inn foreshadows the fact that the Savior himself will be rejected, despised, and ultimately crucified, and that all this was part of God’s plan from all eternity. Ultimately, the lack of room in the inn symbolizes the lack of room we make for him in our hearts. When our hearts are filled with all kinds of other desires than God, we gradually crowd him out altogether.

The Drama and the Dilemma of Fatherhood

The Drama and the Dilemma of Fatherhood

The link above is to a powerful article by Dr. Donald Demarco about the secular world's attack on fatherhood. Dr. Demarco, quoting statements from Pope John Paul II, discusses how the attempt to "abolish" fatherhood began in the Garden of Eden:
Toward the end of his international best-seller, Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Pope John Paul II makes the startling comment that original sin is, above all, an attempt “to abolish fatherhood”.  Tradition teaches that our primal parents’ first sin was one of disobedience and pride.  This is correct, but describes the disposition of Adam and Eve.  When we look at the object of their offense, God Himself, we see that their sin is against His Fatherhood.

According to the serpent, by abolishing fatherhood and the authority it contains, Adam and Eve would be free of all restrictions and become gods themselves.  Tradition also teaches that this Original Sin led directly to a Fall of catastrophic proportions.
The author goes on to discuss why it is crucial for men to strive to follow God's model of fatherhood, not only for the sake of their families, but for the good of society as well . This is a truly insightful article that is worth reading. Please read this and pass in on to others.

No Matter What

This is an awesome video tribute to the Catholic martyrs of the last century.

These heroes willingly gave their lives for their faith. When are the rest of us going to finally wake up and take a stand for our faith like these great men? What are we waiting for to follow their examples and truly live like a Catholic? The martyrs in this tribute sacrificed everything for Christ, yet how many of us are afraid to speak up out of political correctness or eagerly sell out our Catholic morals for the sake of personal financial gain?

God is calling you to live your faith to the end, no matter what.

Awesome Story About a Real Hero

This is an amazing and inspiring story about a real hero: Good Samaritan describes chase that led to girl's freedom. Yesterday's headlines included a story which is every parent's worst nightmare. An 8 year old girl was abducted by a stranger in Fresno, CA. Today's major story is about how a 29 year old man risked his own life to save that same girl from a predator. This hero,Victor Perez, credits God for putting allowing him to save this girl.
He quoted a relative who said divine providence might have stepped in. "God works in mysterious ways," Perez said.
God bless you Mr. Perez. You are a hero and an inspiration to us all. I feel as if I should come up with an award for him. Maybe something like the "Iron Works Iron Man" award? As for the predator that abducted and sexually assaulted this 8 year old girl, while I pray that God has mercy on your soul, I sincerely hope the justice system of California does not.

The Holy Spirit at Work in the Church

It seems as if you can't turn on the news or read a newspaper today without some so-called journalist attacking the Church and the Pope with lies and distorted facts. Just look at headlines over the past several months. Old stories of sex-abuse allegations in the US and Europe were being dragged out and twisted in every way possible just to find even the most remote link to Pope Benedict XVI. I am not trying to deny or make light of the pain suffered by the victims of these predatory priests. However, it is sickening to see how enemies of the Church exploit the victims of these crimes in order to unjustly implicate the Pope who has done more than anyone else in the Church to clean out this filth.

In the face of this anti-Catholic crusade by the media, faithful Catholics shouldn't forget that the Holy Spirit has not abandoned the Church. As evidenced by the recent stories below, the Holy Spirit is leading the Church into what Pope John Paul II called the "new springtime."

The Coming Vocation Explosion
Wisconsin men’s group spreading nationwide, emphasizes restoration of the sacred

The mainstream media choose to ignore the fact that God is blessing us with workers to rebuild his church. Throughout history, each time the Church has been plagued with scandals, God has called forth great saints to restore His Church. Many seminaries and convents are reporting significant increases in the number of men and women entering to answer God's call. It is also worth noting that these young seminarians and postulants are very devout and orthodox in their faith. It is a true sign of the Holy Spirit that some religious orders are looking the build new facilities to accommodate their growing numbers. That is the type of vocation crisis we need more of.

What it Means to Be a Real Man

I recently came across this great article on Catholic Exchange by Maurice Bloomberg of the National Fellowship of Catholic Men:

What is a Real Man – Part 1?

In this article, the writer lists the characteristics of a true Catholic man. This is a long list, but it details those important qualities that all us men need to strive for. Here is just a sample:
A Real Man…
Puts his faith in God – not in himself
Knows he is a child of God
Understands his purpose in life
Is obedient to God’s will.
A Real Man…
Respects himself and other people
Has strength of character as well as body
Behaves with dignity
Accepts responsibility for his actions
Thinks before he acts
Takes pride in his work.
Please click on the link above to read the article and the full list of qualities in the ideal Catholic man. As Mr. Bloomberg points out, society and media are flooding us with  images that are counter to what Christ calls men to be.  It should come as no surprise then that many boys are growing up with no real understanding of what it means to be a man of God.

That brings me to something else that Mr. Bloomberg mentioned in his article, the movie CourageousThis movie is produced by the same people who created the Christian movie Fireproof. In the same way that Fireproof became a tool to strengthen marriages, Courageous looks to do the same for men and men's ministries. Please watch the video below to get a synopsis and behind the scenes look at this new movie scheduled for release in 2011.

Never Ever Give Up In Life

This is a powerful video that I came across on the Anchoress blog. It contains a awesome message about not only perseverance, but of what it means to be a father and God's awesome love for us. Please watch this beautiful video and then read the Anchoress' post at the link above on saving the world by saving fatherhood.
